Lake Clearwater, marginal wind..... mostly 10-12 knots with plenty of lulls.

Mykz SL62, Maui Sails TR3 7.0, MFC RC2 42, MFC RC42, C3 Venom 42, Spitfire 40@15

Checking out 62 Vs 66 slalom boards in marginal conditions to find out which we should use in Dunedin nationals.

Also tried a variety of fins.

Still a lot of drag with the bigger boards even in these conditions.

Forecast 65 kmh winds didn't arrive.

Hey Mike,

What was the verdict on the fins?  Could you pick the difference just by performance?

The lake in these conditions is real good for fin testing (so flat) just have to allow for the fact that it's fresh water. Quite easy to feel the differences.

IMHO, if I was racing tomorrow  in marginal conditions I'd use the MFC RC2 42.......good fin and seems about half a knot faster than my Spitfire. The RC42 is the older,  thicker foil and behaves like that, very solid and motors upwind, actually got the best top speed but I'd still use the RC2 as it feels better when the wind gets up (have used it previously in more wind).

I'm quite impressed with the MFC fins, they don't appear to be 'top of the pops' but I reckon they are good. Borrowed them off another local sailor for the day.

The C3 was too small compared, slushy in the light wind and falls over when the load goes on....seems to be common comment,.... good off the wind though. Have to use a big one of these to get enough grunt.

And the old Spitfire just motors on and isn't all that far off the others....out of the ark though !
