What an October it’s been, my 13th session - best month of the year, covering 520 km! My plan today with the wind in the west to go to Levington just after low water, launch out of the marina entrance and sail the tide in as there is always loads of water in the middle. When I checked the forecast first thing the wind was NW - OK at Levington but not the best and toyed with going to Wrabness and see if you could sail with the tide low. In the end the wind switched to WNW and I couldn’t be bothered to drive the 30 miles and the parking spot is poor for Mag who was coming with me and there is no way I could sail at the gusty Alton which would cost at least £8, maybe £15 :( I think Levington is the best option, local, free and no arm bands required :) and can be sailed at low water too especially in this direction. Arrived at about 11.15 and with cross shore winds gusting to 22 mph I rigged 7m for the 295. It was cooler today so put the hat/helmet on and walked down to the marina entrance and launched without getting my boots muddy:) I sailed out of the channel in flat water and planed across the river. After a few runs down river to the bay I tried a run towards the docks but again there was very little wind and it took me a while to beat back getting 25 kts in the odd gusts. I soon discovered that there was loads of wind in the river and stayed there for the rest of the session. I was out an hour and a half making 27 kts with some nice gybe practice each side of the river in the flatter water and if you messed up it was shallow. I then headed back to the van for cuppa soup with Mag after seeing a seal with loads of geese and waders about:) I had had a close encounter with the large RLNI lifeboat heading to the marina and the Harwich inshore rescue boat was towing a small boat to safety. The man and dog on board were relieved to be safely moored up. If anything, the wind had increased as the tide came in so I headed out again and had the best session of the day. You could plane the full width of the river, top gybing and looking for some swells to race down, just missing 30 kts by a fraction. There were moored yachts and several boats out on the river including a lovely old sailing barge so as usual it made for an interesting sail :) Getting tired I decided to call it a day, coming ashore for a cuppa and cake just as the two RLNI lifeboats left the marina – good day and that might be it for this month with the wind turning North tomorrow and then the van in for a service early next week!
