Cottesloe, Dutch Inn

Nice 12 to 18 knot foiling breeze - almost overpowered at about 5.30pm. Fun trying to ride the small swells.

Mark looked comfortably balanced on long glides.

Long mast is definitely easier for controlling the ride height. Figured out I can pump the foil with my feet, more effectively than pumping the sail.

LOC 2018

actually didn't intend on even being in lano till friday evening decided it might be a nice drive

the conditions peaked my interest so I registered and started pulling out the foil gear Tongue out

was good to catch up with alot of people and have a few good chats before the start, but this did ruin my race as I was stuffing around too much before the start and I actualy missed it, was at least 5 minutes late and puffed out by the time I got on the water after running around on the beach in a full wetsuitYellFoot in mouth

so I got on the water and assumed I was going to be joining the slog fest but I managed to grab just a little gust of SE and with a few pumps I was up flying over reefs nicely and hunting down the fleet

but very quickly began to realize that there was a bit of a discrepency in where all the windsurfers were going relative to where all the kites had been going and it was a MUCH bigger distance than the aprox 100m the race commity had described, so I got a bit curious and didn't go hard upwind with the rest of the fleet and it didn't take long for me to realize that there were two boats where the kites were going and it matched the description given by the race commity exactly, the inside boat had a yellow bouy on the anchor line and the kites were going around it and the other boat was about another 100m to the west with an orange flag up and a big number 1 on the front

I put the foot down and went deep as I started to pick up the freshening seabreeze and amazingly went form last off the beach to 4th around the first markSurprisedTongue outLaughing however I progressivly lost places after I made three little mistakes on the next couple of legs and got wet each time

I was still able to make up ground on the deep runs back to the beach but as we got further down the coarse and the wind got stronger I was less and less competative on the not so deep runs out

I was still going well by the last leg and trading blows with claude but the tanks were running on empty after the big effort before the start to get off the beach and had a good crash in what had become very hairy conditions for the foil with a bit of swell and quite alot of breaze, I spent quite a while in the water stuffing up the water start 3 times

but I did manage to get things together and get back in the bay and navigate the reefs without a spectacular crash, as alway the flat water inside the reefs was a very nice short lived heaven, however I was now contemplating how I was going to get to the beach and I was keeping a close eye on the bottom, but before I knew it I got flung over the front from seemingly hitting the bottom but as I realised as I tried to stand up there was more than enough water under the kit but far too much long weed growing off the bottom, so I had quite a long swim and walk to get to the beach and after helping the confused gear handlers with my kit I wandered over to the finish

feeling absolutely exhausted and like I was robbed on a few occassions today but to be honest I am now pretty content as I did have my fair share of good luck with the fleets confusion over the first mark and all

6.2 reflex 4, 135 JP HF, NP F4 foil with the small wing

gear was awesone, didn't get the chance to tune before race but it just worked and all the settings were pretty good

I was rigged with the big wing and made the decision to change to the small wing last minute and it was definately the right call

also there was a fair few chunks of weed on the coarse and the foil shrugged all them off without hesitation which was a relief

but all up correct me if I'm wrong but I do believe I am the first windfoil to ever finish the Lancelin Ocean ClassicLaughing

Ledge Point, WA, AU

LOC first attempt. Went into the race hoping to finish at best.

Wind stayed easterly all the way until start time of 2:20pm. saw a few masts snapping in the 37 heat so hesitated fully riggin the sail. countdown started and ran down the beach with my sail in the last 10 seconds. Was exhausted by the time I got there and took a breather while the fleet set sail. Most had a difficult time getting of the beach including me until the wind turned southerly. started planing downwind while the leaders of the pack were way up wind.

Hit the reef after gybing at the 2nd inside mark and took a while getting back on. started noticing the wind starting to pick up gradually and getting more and more lit on the big sail and the big board. rough water around all the outside mark made gybing challenging. Could see the finish line before the last gybe but headed as broad a possible to avoid the reef at the south passage. by this time my legs and arms were in agony holding the 7.5 in over 20 knot winds. just made it past the reef and planed cross wind to the finish.

lucky to finish under one hour (59:42) @ 55th place. Thankful to see fellow Pinnas Anita and Ben at the finish line. Thanks for the support. Also stoked to see Jake and Sean smash it and Lunny do well in his first race.

LOC. Wow, where did all the time go? I had a whole 5 hours in Ledge to prepare for the start, but somehow managed to still be frantically rigging in the dunes with 5 minutes to go. Knocked a few people over with the sail as I ran with it toward the front row with 40 seconds to go. Board attached to sail with 30 seconds to go. Geeez, cutting it close. Turns out it didn't matter anyway, as I spent the first 5 minutes standing in knee deep glass off, waiting for something, anything to beach start with. No uphaul, and 107l didn't really lend itself to joining the slow slog out, so just waited until some wind finally arrived. Was probably one of the last 10 or 15 sailors off the beach. But once that gust hit, I was on the plane and away. Straight into the reef. Doh! Nice chunk of fin now missing.

Like Anita said, FO36 fin was horrible (pretty sure I said this last year, no?), spinning out probably 10-15 times per outbound leg, really started to feel my ankles clicking just getting it back in line, and wasn't able to put any speed down at all. Guys trickling past at walking speeds.. Bah. But at least I could make the boats on the outbound legs. On the inbound legs, I needed to throw in at least 2 gybes for most, so probably ended up sailing a bit of extra mileage which wasn't needed. Couple that with getting to the second marker, gybing, and then realising that I hadn't clipped up my harness bar, and that it was just hanging loose!! Gah!!! Jump in the water to fix it, rig flips over and starts floating away! Quick swim and a waterstart on the wrong tack soon fixed that, but there goes another minute. Stupid. It was probably about this time I realised I'd left the flares in the car too. The one race they run in offshore conditions, and I leave the flares in the car....idiot. Well, aside from the above and then needing to throw in 5 gybes to get through the reef on the last leg, the race went pretty well. Could pick up places pretty nicely on the inbound legs and definitely got a lot during the gybes and people went splat around me. Didn't drop one, and this year there were about 10 more than usual so stoked with that. Final run I saw 3 sailors trying to go deep to make the marks, and I was approaching from a deeper angle, so could reach at full steam, so quickly made up the ground and picked up 2 easy places. The only one I didn't catch on the water was Claude, but got him by 1 second in a dash to the line! Exciting stuff!

16th overall and 7th in Open. My best L2L result to date. Yeeeeharrrr!

Great day, great weekend of sailing and great party on sat Cool Stoked!

LOC summary -

The race was started in moderate SE (offshore wind) at 2.20 PM, just 10 minutes before the cutoff time for starting. The last leg would required tacking upwind to the finish. Everyone rigged the biggest gear they had. Lots were still rigging when the field started. It was a wallow at the start as people struggled to get going in the lee of the point. The marker boats had been moved upwind to accommodate the SE direction. Soon after the start a fresh seabreeze came in meaning that most of the field were overpowered.

Snake finished well, 19th overall, despite a fin that sent him spinning out and going sideways for most of the seaward legs

Scarrgo finished the LOC on his foil  - probably the first windsurfer to finish the LOC on a foiling board.

Courageous Kenny (we have renamed him) finished well despite the wind picking up early in the race and being overpowered on a 7.8

Lunny battled his 8.6 racesail through most of the course and finished, exhausted.

Boz hit something big that ripped his fin out.

Remery was underpowered and allowed the rescue boat to pick him up just before the seabreeze booted in

Not sure what happened to Greg

Cannonball and I decided to sit out this one

I was a DNF.

Made it to the first mark in pretty good shape, but the breeze was too much for the 9.6 I rigged and wrestling an overpowered sail downwind for an hour seemed like a good way to blow another disc so I pulled out.

Starting in a Sou'easter when we all knew the seabreeze was on the way was pretty dumb.  I think the race officials need to rethink the 2:30 cut-off for starting the race.  Far better to allow the breeze to come in and then allow 30 minutes so sailors can choose appropriately sized kit.

I don't think I'll do it next year, this year was a complete debacle!

Another year and another LOC, such a interesting race where if all the stars are not aligned a easy race to get a DNF as in my case. This year was differant in the fact the gear I went with was perfect, maybe not for the start of the race but for what did eventuate to be a 18-20kn seabreeze.

I must admit I agree with pointman not for myself but for other competitors who had rigged for the light winds and got hammered not even 15 minutes into the race.

So the race started with everyone on the start running for the water to get going but alas there wasn't even enough wind to hold the sail up once you got to the water. Hillarious to look up the line, as I was all the way down the bottom or close to the bottom, just to see a sea of sails not going anywhere. Uphaul was the preferance but what a debacle people crashing sails into each other and trying to avoid each other once up on the board from the slow speed crashes while floating around. Managed to get up and I merrily floated at approximatley 1 kn to the inner reef and out of harms way. Wasn't long that I could see to the left the seabreeze tell tale signs and managed to pump the board on the plane and off I go, just to see another lull so out of the harness and floated for another 200metres while others where falling in due to no wind.

After the lull it was a proper seabreeze and finally hooked in good and proper with a smile thinking yeah got it right 7m sail big board and super comfortable head to the Mark? Now here is the kicker which mark a group where heading out to a Mark to the left and another to the Right, confusion as prior to the start there was talk of changing the course for the SE and having to tack into the finish line, well the confusion was short lived as I'm watching guys screaming off the wind so the chase begins. Hit the first mark pesumably the correct one in probab;y the best position I have ever got in any of the LOC's and ready to settle in for a clean run. Disaster strikes once again, don't know what I hit but the board slid out I'm in the water trying to fly the sail and the board is just skating, no problems clear the weed and should be right. Trouble is you need a fin to clear the weed, race over skated the board into shore and had a chuckle another DNF but this time it just was the stars were not aligned, damage to back end cracked from the tuttle to the back end after first thinking just the fin got knocked out.

Would I do the LOC again, sure but the organisers do have to realise a lot of people do this for the fun and not for sheep stations, another 30 min delay would have seen the breeze on the shore line and a lot of people would have re rigged or chosen not to start as it turned out heaps went out on 8 and above sails and got into trouble or hurt themselves. Course changes so late in the event cause confusion expecially the first marker as there was a distinct two groups going for differant markers.

Well done to all who finished the race was challenging, see you all next year for third time lucky. Kenny so impressed well done Lunny big effort just to finish on the large sail, Scarrgo bloody brilliant to finish on the foil my hats off to you, pointman I must agree with you a small delay would have made it a differant raceCool

Sean you were eating up the other sailors at the start. I am confident that if the wind had not changed you would have been right up at the top of the field at the finish.

Ricey, I had a fun day. It is well worth the effort of driving to Lancelin just for the social aspect and the spectacle of it all. It is like one big party - lots of friends to catch up with, plenty to chat about (our favourite subject) and lots of stories after, not to mention all the funny crashes on the finish line especially those show offs who decide to show how cool they are and then stuff up... I can recommend the LOC as a great day of entertainment even if you don't compete. Maybe especially if you don't compete - no nerves and gear and scary conditions to deal with. I left all my gear home so I wouldn't be tempted. At the start I was thinking - these conditions would suit me well, maybe I should have... at the end I was thinking "Thank God I didn't!" A 7.5 in that wind and swell would have been too much.

Cheers guys.

Anita, as I was rounding the first mark I actually spotted Jonski in the water and yelling out 'Kennyyyy!'Laughing

Tough luck Boz, Remery and Pointman. The debacle at the start put off a lot of great sailors. I wasnt sure whether I should even go out as I had never sailed in offshore winds hence why I wasnt even rigged. Boom height and harness lines werent in the best position and even started the GPS watch halfway down the course.

Just as well you did that high wind Dutchies training, Remery!

Was shocked to see the live feed start on Facebook in an Easterly! That is a first!

Sorry I used all the wind up! Should be some more coming as I leave on Thursday.

I had an excellent start position, and my usual 104 Magic Ride and 6.5 NCX. At the start I had to hold the sail up for 5 minutes before I got enough of a puff to get on. Soon after I got on the plane and had a good run to the first mark and halfway in. Passed about 20 people, I was comfortable doing 24 knots and I looking forward to finishing for the first time in 30 years. Then I started grovelling again. I was about to pack up but saw some nice gusts, took off out and back again halfway back I was grovelling again and could see the pickup ute's on the beach straight ahead. I was a long way behind and pretty much on my own. Figured it wasn' t going to get an better so sailed in. Turns out there were quite a few people that sailed back to Ledge maybe why I ended up alone. My gear was half in the truck when the wind hit. I did 10km in 30 mins sailing.  The next person we pick up was on a 7.8 an exhausted. My 6.5 would have been perfect. I just needed to trust the seabreeze.
