1970 days ago 0-30kts SW - SSW Myall Shores Mungo Brush, NSW, AU
5m OD - 80ltre iso- 28cm Maui weedie- then
68ltre Starboard acid waveboard
Bom showed 15-20kts on Myall side and 25 - 30 on the other and looking at it there was an obvious windline with solid wind to the east.
This was the day I decided to see how I went with the 80ltre in stronger and rougher stuff..Wrong Day!!
I was the first to launch and headed out to the windline. I thought I'd be very overpowered and I was right! There was also very peaky chop and the board was richocetting off the peaks like a mad ball in a pinball machine! I could see I was going to kill myself so I rounded up, turned the board and headed back in..Mad bum clench ride back in but I still got 25.99kts which is surprising considering the conditions and I was survival sailing.
That put the wind up me.. I haven't had a scary sail like that for many years..Not slalom board conditions at all!
I sat on shore for an hour or so and it seemed to ease off a bit.. Set off again and had an ok sail to the other side except my glasses were all fogged up and I couldn't see a thing.. Coming back I was sailing like a gumby . One second you were maxed out , the next you had to be out of the harness and straps..I was a bit slow getting out of the harness and fell in a bit..Then I had trouble getting enough wind to waterstart!
It came back in with a vengeance. I had my 68 ltre waveboard with me ( haven't sailed it in 2 years) so I thought that might be a better fit..I should have rigged the 3.8 or 4m wavesail but I wasn't sure if it would work on my severne mast and didn't really expect to stay out long anyway..
Wow ! Much better the board just glided down the swells ( by now there were 5' waves in the channel - and yes confirmed by Byron...)I had a ball going to the other side and got the 2 sec on that .Even went for a bearaway on the other side..
I was thinking ' Thank god I'm not on the slalom board in this!!"
Not so good coming back as you were heading right into the 5 ' waves and even unhooking and going slow the board was still jumping right out of the back of the wave... I just headed to the point and walked it back..even then there were 2-3' rollers and the board was spinning around on the end of the mast in the gusts..
That'll do for today...very tired...
Boy I'll remember that one bearaway down the swelllines for a long time.. Yeehaa!
Next time it's like that I'll just go straight to the waveboard and smaller sails..
