Cervantes, WA, first day of races. Did only two races. First one on 112/7.0 was ok, just a tolerable amount out of my comfort zone. Knowing that I had no chance of placing, but a very good chance of screwing up my jibes, I let most of the field start ahead of me, which gave me lots of space on the water. Second race on overpowered on 6.3, and I made the mistake of starting a bit better, so that there were lots more others sailing close to me and at the marks. Not my idea of fun when I'm fighting for control!

Thinking that the wind would probably pick up even more, as it had every day we sailed in WA so far, there was no way I'd go out on the same gear again. Downsizing the board would have helped, but the 89 had a ding that needed to be fixed first, and Nina was on the 72. The wave board would have been nice, except that Nina was using the 4.7 wave sail, and the race sails would have been too much of a mismatch to the little 20 cm wave fin. To top things off, I ended up being late for the sandwiches, and not a single vegetarian one was left, so I ended up walking back to our apartment to get some food and buy some epoxy at the little hardware store.

In contrast to the not-much-fun earlier part of the day, the party at the Lobster Shack in the evening was great. It was nice to meet new people, get a chance to talk to some of the speedsurfers (including a few who regularly show up on top of the rankings), and to see Nina walk up to collect her 3rd-place medal in the GPS challenge.

Looks like Nina placed 3rd in the races, too, but they did not score her in any race. Instead, they gave me results for race 3 and 4, which I did not sail since I did not have a smaller board than the 112. It's quite possible that all the results they show in my name (42, 47, 38, and 44) are actually Nina's results, in which case she would have been 2nd in the Women's class with 124 points after one discard.

Apparently, using "N" as the sail number for Nina and "NI" for me was too confusing for the judges. We did this since we are sharing sails, and did not know in advance which sails we'd use for the races; adding an "I" to the "N" is something that was easy enough to do. But we had registered and signed in with these numbers, and they were clearly visible on the sails with full-size letters.

Boz, judging by the water colors and my "stance", it's into the drink! Congrats to your second place, well done!

Mike, bugger indeed. Having run a bunch of events ourselves, we understand that mistakes can happen. A proper apology would have gone a long way to smooth things out, but the response to a private messages was rather on the nasty side, with things like "misinformed data", "no number no result", "it does not affect the results", and so on. Nina is so demotivated by this that she won't do the event here in Lancelin or any other event in Oz.

Guys, dont be demotivated! Be motivated to get on the podium as No1!

You know how you sailed and thats most important thing!

Well done for all of your WA sessions, what a cracker holiday!

So sad for Nina. Clearly she is a top sailor, and I was surprised not to see her in the podium photos for the racing.

After all the efforts Issac put into promotion of the event I ams surprised a bit more was not done to sort this out or placate you.

Nina, I am so sorry this has soured your experience in WA.

Learn from it and differentiate your sail numbers better for the next event so it doesn't happen again. I can see that from a distance N and NI may be difficult to differentiate. If you look at that photo above they do look very similar, one looks like a blurry version of the other. N and NX would be just as simple to do but easier to see.

Nina, you must do the Lancelin Ocean Classic while you are here. It is one of the world's great windsurfing events. Even to finish is a feather in your cap.

Champions put their negative experiences behind them and use them as extra motivation to prove themselves in the next event

I hope to meet you in Lancelin!

Thanks for your kind comments, they are very much appreciated. RIght now, it does not look like Nina will do the Lancelin Ocean Classic, which is a bummer. I had not planned to do it, but she's a much better windsurfer than I am (and would be able to get going on the gear we have if the start is again in very light wind). We hope to meet you too, Anita. Meeting lots of speedsurfers from Oz has been a highlight of the trip already!

I am very sorry to hear of the mix up and disappointed in the race organisers response. Frown

A huge congratulations to Nina for the results we all know she got though. CoolLaughing

Try to forget it and enjoy the sailing. Laughing

Peter you are right Nina  was 2 spots ahead of you in that pic and ahead of me (ka72);and my son to the far right of this pic but I over took Nina in this race and  the last 2r races just on the straights and we  both had a laugh about it at the finish. Was a fun day.Laughing I haven't slalom races for 15 odd years so let everyone go before me including Nina, Jo and of course Karin who charged ahead of all of us.
