Peter (48462km):
1931 days ago Cervantes, WA, first day of races. Did only two races. First one on 112/7.0 was ok, just a tolerable amount out of my comfort zone. Knowing that I had no chance of placing, but a very good chance of screwing up my jibes, I let most of the field start ahead of me, which gave me lots of space on the water. Second race on overpowered on 6.3, and I made the mistake of starting a bit better, so that there were lots more others sailing close to me and at the marks. Not my idea of fun when I'm fighting for control!
Thinking that the wind would probably pick up even more, as it had every day we sailed in WA so far, there was no way I'd go out on the same gear again. Downsizing the board would have helped, but the 89 had a ding that needed to be fixed first, and Nina was on the 72. The wave board would have been nice, except that Nina was using the 4.7 wave sail, and the race sails would have been too much of a mismatch to the little 20 cm wave fin. To top things off, I ended up being late for the sandwiches, and not a single vegetarian one was left, so I ended up walking back to our apartment to get some food and buy some epoxy at the little hardware store.
In contrast to the not-much-fun earlier part of the day, the party at the Lobster Shack in the evening was great. It was nice to meet new people, get a chance to talk to some of the speedsurfers (including a few who regularly show up on top of the rankings), and to see Nina walk up to collect her 3rd-place medal in the GPS challenge.
