sboardcrazy (24291km): NW very on and off. mainly patchy 5 - 12kts occasional 15-20kt and few puffs more Budgewoi Lake, NSW, AU 7m OD - RS2 ( 90ltres) - 18cm tribal Level 0.21m ( shallowest that's really 'safe ' in the flats is 0. 25m ) With catastrophic fire conditions it was recommended people near bush leave so I decided to fill the car and spend the day at Budgy. I got home late from sailing the night before and stayed up late preparing the property and packing valuables. Got up early and continued this morning so I was buggered when I got to Budgy. Wasted some good wind early on dozing . By the time I rigged it had completely died Nigel turned up and I decided to go out and hope. It took about 40 mins walking , slogging to get up to a good possy. I'd bought the chop eating Rs board but it wasn't too bad ( probably because the wind wasn't consistent). Pity with more consistent wind and a bit more W it would have been epic alpha etc. Not enough or long enough gusts for gybing. Finally set for some fun and the tribal started spinning out in a really bad way. After a lot of swearing at it I finally checked and it had a 2cm gap at the front full of weed.. I couldn't push it shut so it was a crappy slog back in to tighten it. Finally back out lots of walking and waiting. Got 2 fun gusts but I was crapping myself as I was flying into the shallows and I wasn't sure how deep it was.. Once I stopped I was on the bottom and had to walk out. I don't think I'll do that again. It's too risky.. Pity a bit more W and 20kts and it would have been epic as there is a big weedy glassy patch and then you could angle your runs into the deeper water ( knee deep) ... The Nw was pushing me into the shallows and it was hard to get out high enough due to lack of wind and wind shifts. Very hot and dry. I wore my wettie as I figured it would hold the water for longer but you could feel the wind drying you out ( 37 degrees and 7% humidity). I hung around till I figured it was safe to go home. We survived another day- we've just got to get through a whole summer of fires.. 2/10 Budgy day and that's only because I got 2 good runs.. |
