Sunday 8th May - Windsurf *** The Dip, Felixstowe – sunny.

Fin – 14.07 knot max, 12.59 knot ave., 7.55 knot hour, 10.51 knot mile, 44.70 km., 7.22 knot alpha.

Fanatic Cat with Tushingham Lightning 9.4m and 8.5m with 39 fin.

As I haven’t been out on the water for 13 days, I was keen to get out today with a nice breeze from the east forecast and sunshine. Arrived at The Dip around ten with mainly foilers there although Mark Davis was hoping to take his slalom board out, I would have defiantly foiled as it looked perfect especially with the tide low making an easy launch with the sea smooth too but I am not getting my new foil gear for a couple of weeks so it was time to wash the dust off my 1997 Fanatic Cat raceboard which I used to love sailing! With foiler Andy rigging 6.4, there looked a good breeze so I rigged 8.5 but after one run out there was nowhere near enough breeze so I came ashore and changed to 9.4. To be honest although I was out the best part of four hours and was underpowered most of the time:( although the foilers were going well with the wind not getting above 13 knots! The 9.4 was better so I set off down the coast doing long runs out to sea, making it to Landguard beach with some nice smooth runs just needed a few more knots of breeze. I did not like using the very heavy 9.4 and I struggled to tack with the raceboard seeming to be very narrow and tippy compared to a foil board which is much easier to sail and can’t wait to get back foiling! The beat back was OK especially as you were sailing into the tide but did two mile runs out to sea and got back easily enough. I had a few runs in front of kite beach where the water was fairly smooth but still under so decided to call it a day, the foilers had finished with only Nick out winging. Several of the foilers had complained about hitting several fish which is not very relaxing when foiling, can’t imagine it does the fish much good either! There are several breezy days coming from Tuesday, fingers crossed its windy enough to shortboard sail, if not I will have to take the longboard out again!
