Duxbury Bay, north side. First cold session of the season - 7 C and cloudy. Wind was gusty at first and lower than the 22 knot averages that the meter showed - the wind has to cross a lot of land and reed islands in N, and does not reach the water, especially low-to-mid-tide. It got steadier towards the high tide, but also dropped. Warp 71, RB 7.0, WD 33.

Al, congrats on PBs, good distance. You need GT31 for the distance or set GW60 to 5 Hertz then it will last 7+ hours on a full charge. Peter, what kind of heater do you have under your suit? Sailing in negative 7 C definitely would be my PB.

Thanks everybody!. Denis, good point to set GW60 to 5 Hertz., I will definitely do it.

Sorry to disappoint here but setting it on 5hz or 1hz is not going to make the battery last any longer. GW-60 is reported to be good for about 6 - 9 hours when fully charged. Mine is in 6 - 7 hours range. For distance, GT-31 is better for sure. 5hz setting gives higher max speed, so really good for getting exited about max display speed.

Boro is right, or course. Theoretically, a GPS battery could last longer at a lower hz rate, but I doubt it will make much of a difference to set the GW-60 to 1 Hz. For the GW-52 which has similar battery life, there's a claim that using it at 1 hz extends recording time by an hour.

I found that the charging of the GW-60 is a bit iffy, and now usually use a USB tester when charging so I can see how much current is flowing. On one GW-60 watch, it looked like it was charging, but there was no current. Locosys replaced that one under warranty. That's probably not the exactly the same issue that Al had, but I have seen my GW-60 showing a full charge on the screen before it actually was fully charged. That could cut run time short by an hour or two.

Denis, -7 C would be a record for me, too - I'm not that crazy! Note the space between the - and the 7, just like in the previous sentence. I have a strong aversion again boring sentence structures; semicolons and dashes are underused! But back to the temperatures - all the sessions we had here before this one where in temps closer to 15 C, often with sun. So the 7 C session without sun was a lot colder. I used open palm mittens, a hood, 5 mm booties, and my Ianovated suit with the heating tubes the first time, and I really needed the heating tubes. I really wanted to go sailing yesterday to back up Al. I actually drove to Barnstable Harbor in my wetsuit, but it was too darn cold by the time I got there, and still dropping quickly (it dropped below freezing before dark). I was just not ready for that yet, and the wind direction was not right either: too much west, no flat water. Being out there all alone just did not seem like a great idea.

When going for distance, I tend to use a Canmore or two for backup. It's got a longer battery life than the watch, and is small enough that I can put two in a waterproof bag, or one in the same pouch as a GW-52. Just don't forget to double-bag them. The other thing to do is to re-charge the GW-60 when you take a break. I usually need a longer break before the battery gives up. It charges fastest when the battery is near empty, so a 60-minute charge during a break should give you another 2 hours (or more) of recording time. That would have gotten you above 200 km!
