Barcole - Trieste - Italy...isonic111, vapor 6.0, deb sl4 34

Something was really wrong today :(

Conditions were pretty good, 15-30+kts wind and not to much chop. I went out and the first run I did top score for today. My display showed 34+ and I was really optimistic that I would break 35kts on this board. But it never really happened :(

I think that my fin was really too small. It was kind of ok if I hit the right gust + flat water, but the problem was that strong gusts are not really long and water was not really flat and this fin has to be driven with care and it needs some time to get in top speed. I tried to use every gust as soon as possible and I guess I was to aggressive. I had a few nasty spinouts that were really scary because it was pretty much crowded with a lot of freestylers on the way. With his same fin I did my best result ever (35.77 with isonic 101) so I guess the fin is very fast but simply to small for this board.

I am still optimistic that I can break 35kts with this wide slalom board but not on this spot. It really has to be super flat and loooong strong gust!

I have to say that I am not really super stoked about this GPS thingie. I was too focused on top speed and I did not really enjoy windsurfing as usual...You have to head into the wind all the time with too small fin, wait for the right gust, you usually make gybe just at the end of the gust where there is no more wind etc...

Hey Marko, just relax - no pressure: than the best results just pops up. :-)

I love meassuring with GPS, no matter the results, becouse you see the week points and can improve. It can happen that you start just to think about what will be the numbers (I admit happened to me also), and that kills joy of sailing. However, itf you find right balance and use GPS as a tool for improvemenet, no problem! I now very easily forget that I have one or two gps'es on my arms, and just go for a happy ride! :-)

I use 35 Select on 111, as smallest. I tryed twice 33, but it did not work, although Jan says it goes with 33. Depends on conditions and your style, suppose.

Thanks Adi!

I do not know about the other GPS speed surfers, but my trim/equipment is really different if I want to score 2sec max with slalom gear then just freesailing. Usually when I go windsurfing without GPS, I have a nice, relaxed but still fast trim. Also if I do slalom racing, I allways go for trim with maximum control and that it is not demanding phisically. I usually score some 32-33kts 2sec speed with this trim in chop/waves. If I go for 2sec max, I usually put my mast foot 2-3cm back, raise my boom, put a smaller fin and search for flatwater paths. This leads to a trim that is pretty much useless for anything other then pure downwind speed. I gain one or two knots in max speed, but everything else is heavily compromised...I forgot to mention, gybing this wide slalom board with too small fin in chop is a nightmare.

I think that I will go back to pure joy of windsurfing and use GPS just as a tool. I will go for max speed only when conditions are really good! Otherwise, I am back to nice relaxed trim!

Cheers

Hey Marko,

I know what you mean...it is good to relax from time to time....on the other hand I like the competitive edge and I use the GPS as a motivational tool..to try to improve...set a goal and then try to beat it...trim the equipment...search for the right conditions...

Anyway I did my best score 35.33 kts on iSonic111 with Warp 6.8 and I used a Select S09 33cm fin.

Didn't really have problems with spinout or windangle with this fin mainly I think because there is a very small chop in Kosljun bay ..otherwise I would use 36cm fin with this combo...

Hope to see you soon on the water (maybe in Shimuni next weekend?)

Hi Jan! I hope that some good forecast for Shimuni will show soon :)

About small fin, my conclusion is - only for perfectly flat water and long enough downwind run! Like at Kosljun bay I suppose!
