Koombana Bay, WA, AU Foiling session

7m - manta foil.

wind was absolutly crazy - south / south east/ south west.

It did not kick in to around 1600hrs.

Bender had the best wind earlier on the formula kit.

Water flat crystal clean

Happy days

Once again I am a winner. This time it is idiot of the day. When you consider the the ne-er do wells , deros and other forms of pond life that make up the membership of the Manbra Mob this is not an easy title to win.

First I managed to put my front entry wet suit on back to front. I did consider walking and sailing backwards for the afternoon and when you consider the caliber of the days team ( Mike ,SluGger and the fangman) I could have gotten away with it. Instead , being an honest and clever fellow I decided to jump in the air and rotate very quickly.Unfortunately I could not achieve the required rotational speed and had take it off and put it on the right way around.

Upon launching I noticed that my board slid easily through the weedy shallows but would not line up to sail away,No Fin

Once the fin was fitted I tried to sail off again only to have the boom come loose.Did not fasten the outhaul.

With all fixed I set off only to sail straight into channell sand where I dismounted with my usual grace and elan.

After that it mostly plain sailing with no more than the usual elegant dismounts.

Anothe fun session in fangys weed, with Ros Simon and Basil

Good conditions to try out my new 2019 6.2 koncept. Great sail. but just before launch my anemometer said 20av 24 gusts, so I used the ne 48cm board with the 19cm @ 55ds. Worked very nicely when it was 20kts, but the smaller board was finding plenty of holes. I got fed up watching slugger and fangy flying around so changed to the 53cm board with the 20cm fin. Of course to everybody's delight this pushed the wind up a notch. And I got another notch when the others went in. This session was much more fun, more wind bigger board, had me on the plane 95% of the time. Sail felt fantastic.

My goal today was alphas, I don't think we've done any good team wise, but I wore DIY logger V2 on my left arm today, to see if it makes any difference to the 2s gybe discrepancy.

I think today was a battle between Cap'n Calm and Huey. I was going to call it a battle of wits, but Basil took out first prize with his wetsuit on backwards and fitting better as a result. When I chucked in the study at lunchtime, it was blowing very nicely. Sludge turned up with his beer flavoured ice cream van and possibly the wind dropped a tad. Shiny, shiny brand new hi-vis sails Cap'n Calm turned up and ensured that my carrying the little board down to the beach had been a waste of time as the breeze dropped from awesome to zombie.

In the end, I decided that the Barge and FF24, KaR 7.1 was the deal. And for the most part, it was a reasonable choice. The higher tide meant that I could sail most places, but the weed was still too thick for any speed. There were some nice little patches to run through, but I found it difficult to keep enough sail pressure for an entire nauti.  Happily, late in the arvo, just as I had pontificated to Sludge that the breeze had done its dash, Cap'n Calm went and changed to a big board. Instant increase of a couple of knots and I reckon the last few laps of the pond were the best of the day.

All in all a fun session with the select few mobbers, and the Beer o'clock with Sludge to round out a Top Ten Fangy Day. Laughing

Good one Joe. Status report on weed?

Weed Report, Firstly there was about 10 to 15 cm of extra water depth, bergs were predominantly just under the water surface, I managed to get thru most bergs, except when gybing and got thrown off a few times in the gybe.  Still speedsailing at your own risk, but best conditions since the bergs took over.

Hardie, how is the weed over on the Point Grey side?

Point Grey weed, is generally ok except at the end of the main speed run where there are a clump of about 10 weedbergs which are unpassable

Liptons/PtGrey Warning = Big minus storm surge today of minus 12cm. Yesterdays tide was zero storm surge and about 45cm to 48cm when I sailed. Today it will be down to 30 to 32cm in the afternoon. Makes it dangerous for speedsailing. My intentions are to sail Liptons, but with my smallest delta 19cm 55degree rake and only do alphas.

PS. I know the whole area intimately, and am prepared to take calculated risks, there are many impassable weed bergs at this low tide, it's not worth a serious injury

Thanks for the warning Hardie. Ironically, I was going to try a fin 12cm shorter today, looks like the tide gods have conspired to defeat that plan.
