Exocet Formula Severne R4 10.7 Drake R19

Today was supposed to be a light session on the formula gear but it ended up being a very thorough workout. I was staggering through my tacks by the time I chucked it in. I was so stuffed I could barely get my wettie off. The wind was up and down but as it turned out it was down when I was on the shore talking and up when I went out. I was powered up to overpowered for most of those 34 k's. 23 knots is slow considering how powered up I was which reinforces my belief that the R19 is a bit slower downwind. I don't mind dropping a knot or 2 offwind as the R19 is so powerful upwind. I love the way it holds it's height in the lulls.

During one downwinder I got a gust that was too much for me so I rounded up a bit and feathered the rig. I was dissapointed in that and told myself next time I would hold on to it. As the next big gust came along I told myself keep it locked down and pull away as the gust hits. Well I pulled away okay but I sheeted out a bit. This had the effect of dumping a shit load of pressure into the rig! I managed to hang on but for a second there I thought it was going to trebuchet my ass over warners bay and into hillborough lol. Bloody good fun going downwind in those rolling waves and just what I needed to work off the frustration of another cold front dud.

CASL62, 7.6, MUF28. A bit chilly, just me & Pete, the others too smart. Still, was good to get a bit of rough water after being spoiled at Peelie for so long.

You certainly get about when you sail. Yep we havent had a decent front all season!

Sue formula boards are the grand tourers of windsurfing you can get upwind fast and then slide downwind at whatever pace suits you.  They don't call upwind sailing "works" for nothing in most cases it's a tough grind but formula boards are one of the few classes that make upwind sailing fun as well. Skiff moths and catamarans certainly do the same and kite raceboards smoke upwind but there seems to be a lot of knee work going on with those guys.

Cluffy - Pity they have such big heavy sails or I'd have a go.

I suppose my Xcross is sort of a formula board for me.It goes upwind great with a pointer although probably not as good as a dedicated formula board.

Bruce I enjoyed the small chop at Canton last time I was there. If there isn't enough wind to go really fast 28kts + EmbarassedWink I find it's more interesting.

Bruce,

Peely was OK on Sunday, especially as you could rig up out of the freezing wind, but getting back upwind was a tad harder though.

That's what I noticed last time especially not powered up and with the little fins.
