Thursday 9th October – windsurf **** Beauduc, Camargue – sunny periods

After another windy night on the beach at Beauduc we are definitely moving on today. I just had to decide whether to sail?  I had left my gear rigged behind a sand dune so didn’t even have to rig and when the first people on the water were a couple of windsurfers I made up my mind to give it an hour and see what happened – especially as the fishing boats have been laying fishing nets since early morning!:( So after a quick repair to a batten end and fitting a longish piece of rope from my mast base to my extension so if it happened to pop off again I wouldn’t lose my board!  With the wind the same as yesterday I set off across the bay and hadn’t gone far when I found my first drift net of the day but managed to stop before wiping out!!!  I then headed further downwind across the bay to where the others launch from and was able to sail the full width of the bay with no nets, even if it was a bit rougher here.  It was great fun beating out and then going for fast mile runs back and at times the 7m was on its limit:)  There were only 3 windsurfers out and 25 kiters.  The sun even managed to make an appearance at times but it was still warm and you only needed a shorty:)  Then with the hour up I started to make my way back to the van when my foot got stuck in my new safety leash and I couldn’t get it out!!!:(  So I slowed, dropped my sail to windward then fell on top of the sail and put my hand through the large middle panel!  Luckily I was near the beach so I sailed to shore and walked back to the van for lunch.  The 7m X15 was on its last legs so I am now looking for yet another new sail – a 7m X15 or lightning – e-bay here I come.  It was too windy to load all the boards on the van so I put the biggest on and the others inside and headed off the beach.  We had to go through a flood caused by the wind blowing water from the etang across the road, then the 7 miles on a very bumpy road and past the 2m chicane without any damage much to Mag’s relief!  Phew!  We then drove through the Camargue back to Arles but were lucky enough to have a brilliant display by a Marsh Harrier hovering over the reeds and over a flock of flamingos in the Etang de Vaccares:)  Called to get diesel and a quick shop in a far too Giant Casino Geant!  Back to our favourite overnight spot at Les Baux de Provence to de-sand the van and ourselves!  Living on a beach isn’t as wonderful as the dream!!
