Soldiers Cove with Capn Calm and Muffin.Having neatly packed away all the blouses I was trying on yesterday, I thought I would do some exploring of the cove with my fellow blousies. I chose the top end to launch from which has the advatage of easy access, but the disadvantage of the rigging area being directly exposed to the wind. Caution :There is a corroded metal post just past the end of the jetties that was only just visible on today's tide.

Good bits - there would seem to be potential for a great run down the samphire bank and the majority of the cove is shallow enough to allow 'beach starts'.

Bad bits - there is crabs in there even though its winter! The wind was super frustrating today, fluctuating in direction and intensity over very short distances, making it very difficult to sail. I am not sure how much is down to the day being pretty rubbish or whether its just a gusty spot, or both.

Overall it was not a Top Ten Fangy Day, but I reckon this spot is on probation until a decent westerly arrives ( perhaps not quite as mental as yesterday's) and I can try that run down the samphire in a bit more breeze.

As Fangy says, this place was promising some very enjoyable runs, but the wind was just so strange, they didn't quite eventuate. There's a couple of 2 storey houses less than 1km upwind at the Northen end. In this wind direction that was the start of the run. I think wind will be better when it's WSW, and the wind is off low bush. It's a tad shallow at the southern end, grounded the fin when I gybed on a gravelly sounding bottom.

Still having spin out problems, maybe because I was just too underpowered.

Used the 65, 6.6 and 21 55d

Boggy Lake, SA, AU

NNE to NNW 10-30 knots, gusty+ prolly averaging 18 knots. Patrik 92 then FF111 when wind went NNW-KA Koncept 6.2m-Techart weedy 30cm.

Daunting session, unfit, gusty, brooding over potential for damage which I estimated as being high!!, so put on buoyancy vest to protect ribs, it was padding anyway. Stacked only into gybes.

Stayed with Patrik with NNE then wind eased so came in and then wind died. Board, sail, fin was good combo.

No wind so switched board to FF111 with C3 Sting2 38cm with 6.2m and went out with intent of sailing to Carl who was skunked! Suddenly wind kicked from NNW and missed flat water before chopped up:-( Peak speed was on a suicide run on this board, survived, wind kicked 20-30knots so came in!

What a day, Carl major stack but no major damage from him nor anyone else considering gnarly wind/chop:-)

FangyDear, sorry that it wasn't an "epiphany" in Soldier's Cove and I'm glad you missed that last post. On Google Maps it looks as though I should bring a sand iron for use on the crabs in that bunker at the northern end.  Anyway the speeds don't seem to rival Luderitz....unless Capt'n Marvel and Fin come up with the goods in their postings. What are the depths like along the samphire run and did you leave any footprints in it or eviscerate any avine residents?? By the way, I see that alpha as a target that I might well be able to match (after considerable practice)Smile

Thanks for the info Fangy. What was the tide reading when you were there, and how much higher would it need to get to go over the samphire and the jetties?

Wazzawarmanddry the birds are all up the northern end and if you have a sense of smell you cant miss them! None of them seemed bothered by us today, but that maybe because of the speed we were doing..not. As for the alpha, perhaps it would be wiser not to heap so much pressure on yourself upon your return. Think of it as a Utopian goal, not necessarily one you can achieve, but one to quietly aspire to.

Anita, I didnt check the tide height at all, but the samphire was approx 20cm clear of the water. The jetties would always be visible even if its only the uprights and not the deck.

what time of day were you there?

I launched 1335 and came in 1515.

This tells you how much the houses etc cut the wind down.

Mandurah wind 22may

And here's the water levels

mandurah storm surge

So I'd say 1.0m to 1.1m would be close to ideal, the wind would get over the Samphire better than it did today.

It certainly didnt look that windy back here either Mike. I am always a bit suss about the weather station at the Yacht club when there is any hint of a northerly in the breeze. I think there is some funnelling off the Halls Head headland across the yacht club hard stand.

Thanks for posting the tide data too.Laughing

PJ it sounds as though that weather system didnt lose to much of its power by the time it got to you! Kudos on getting stuck into and surviving.Laughing
