Cervantes, WA. Uncharacteristically unwindy for Cervantes slalom today but windier than yesterday's becalmed GPS event. If only the event was next week!

It was a case of running your biggest boards and sails - saw 150L+ boards out there! 115L Tabou Rocket/AV Modena 108L/WS33/29/ Moto7.8

Thought I'd share my wrap-up of attending the Cervantes Challenge:

Started the trip with a sail on Wednesday to light winds but enough to keep powered up on my biggest sail with a few trial runs along the slalom course from Hansen Bay, out to the offshore island and zig-zagging down to Thirsty Point. After celebrating the new year in at The Club was hoping to have another sail on Thursday but the wind wasn't going to co-operate so had a rest day before the GPS speed event on Friday. Unfortunately, the wind fizzled out almost precisely as the 1.00pm start time approached, so no decent sailing possible and called it after an hour on the water.
The Saturday slalom main event was looking like a day similar to Friday but got just enough wind to run the full 4 races. The wind was light (around 15kn) and very flukey with many missing the first buoy as couldn't get on the plane. Overall I had 3 reasonably clean races which is a definite step-up from the previous 3 years competing, dropping no gybes on the first race and a couple the following 2 races. Ran into a wind black-hole on race 4 after the first buoy so called it and sailed back.(Your finishing position is based on your best 3 results anyway)
We then all cleaned up to head to the Lobster Shack for dinner and thank the organisers and congratulate the winners (not me as Legends - over 61's -  is largest and very competitive category!) and socialise with fellow competitors and their families. Such an awesome event and inspires me to keep trying to be a better sailor. I'll be back!

Thanks for the write up Topcat. Shame there wasn't a few knotts more wind.
